So there’s this guy in the lab, he can be really helpful but there’s one catch.

His advice comes followed by a raft of insults… relating to clothes, age, sentence structure, yo mama, whatever is the flavour of the day. He’s nice in one hand, but a totally outspoken in another. I’m not sure if he’s either over compensating for his lack of <insert here>, I am starting to believe that he might just be afraid people might think he’s not this ‘amazing’ badass…not that that him being or not being an amazing scientist bothers me AT ALL. I just want to be friendly without all the embarrassing insults.

There is a lot of gossip in scientific circles. Everyone wants to know someone who they think might know someone who once worked in a lab with a nobel laureate. So people tend to over stretch the truth and throw mud around, which can create a toxic and pressurised environment, where people are desperate to publish but too afraid to do so because their work will be immediately scrutinised.

I recently read a short article that talked about withdrawing from the social hierarchy game, publish in TIME which made me smile Link to original article.

I am unsure how to proceed with this person and whether to be bothered by the insults…
